In the early 90s, during the height of cubicle farming and maze-like offices, architect Gaetano Pesce began designing a futuristic office model that was exactly opposite. Set up like a living room with large communal tables; the office was open, colorful, and filled with art. Initially, professionals flocked to the new-age office model. Gaetano’s futuristic office predicted a paradigm shift that would blow up in years to come. But, executives said their opinions changed after actually working in the brightly colored, loud and open office. The concept failed, with employees seemingly unable to work in a space so freeing. The number one complaint wasn’t the plastic floors or shocking art throughout the space; it was the lack of walls. Fast-forward to 20 years later and the modern office layout aligns with Gaetano’s early vision. Today, open offices can be found in startups and large corporations alike, as the importance of company culture and collaboration has become affiliated with innovation and success.
